When reflecting on my childhood, some of the most cherished memories are intertwined with my grandparents' deli and corner store. It was a place where I'd sneak sips of coffee from my mom's cup, nap under the service counter, and eventually, cultivate my own entrepreneurial spirit with a Jansport backpack candy store. This little corner store, a haven for my sister and me, was more than just a business; it was a warm refuge where smiles, hearty meals, and my mom-mom's even warmer hugs awaited.
Weekends were dedicated to resupplying the store. We'd venture to the local wholesale club, stock up on candies, and acquire various items for sandwiches, sodas, and chips. Once back home, our task was to count and sort the candies, meticulously preparing them for sale the following week. I recall spending countless hours as a child counting sour patch kids, watermelons, gummy bears, crazy straws – each piece a cherished favorite. My grandmom's touch turned these candies into a colorful display behind the counter, creating a place of nourishment and excitement for the neighborhood kids and countless memories for me.
My grandparents' corner store was more than a business; it was a hub of community nourishment and childhood excitement. Witnessing their tireless efforts and generosity shaped my values—hard work, resilience, and selflessness. Despite earning modest paychecks, they managed to give abundantly to those around them. Their secret? Love, hope, and unity.
As I navigate adulthood, I strive to bring the same light into the world that illuminated my childhood. Today, I write about unconditional love – the driving force behind the lessons learned in that corner store.
Last September marked a pivotal time for my family, involving painful changes triggered by a violent incident concerning my Mom Mom. Still in the process of understanding these changes and grappling with my faith in humanity, my art practice has become a transformative sanctuary. The "Gummy's Are Forever" series, a labor-intensive process involving hundreds or even thousands of hand-cast gummy bears, serves as my therapeutic outlet. These pieces, born from meditative creation, have illuminated the darkest corners of my life, embodying signs of hope and unity.
